Greg Jackson's Cups (as of 4 May 2011)

The collection focuses by intent on colleges and universities, but it includes a few other cups as well. It's currently displayed in my Washington DC office.

Why the collection? During my Harvard faculty years, I taught in the Institute for Educational Management. This was case-based instruction, and the tradition was to disguise the identity of the case subjects. But we discussion leaders always tried to plant a few clues. My clue, from early on, was that I would drink coffee during class using a cup from the actual institution disguised in the case. I accumulated lots of cups preparing case materials, and got into the habit of buying a cup whenever I visited a campus. Some IEM participants figured out my clue pattern, and some of them decided I needed cups from their institutions, which they sent me and which caused the collection to grow.

Then, one day once I’d moved downriver to MIT, I was teaching myself how to do lists in html (this is back when one actually typed in the tags by hand), needed something for a nested list, saw the cups on the shelf, and made a Web page listing them, the precursor of the one you’re looking at. I eventually linked that to my home page, and so visitors who looked at my page started bringing or sending me still more cups. Since then I've continued both to buy cups when I visit campuses and to receive donations from those who see the collection or run across this site.
